Two teenagers appeared in the Humansdorp court this morning following their arrest in connection with the murder of Liyolo Wakweni (18).
Before the start of this morning’s court proceedings, learners waved placards with words such as ‘No bail’, ‘Justice for Liyolo’, and ‘prison sentence’ in front of the court while loudly chanting. The SAPS had to block the road.
The suspects appeared in the A-Court in the Magistrate’s Court before Landros Agherdien, while Miss Faith Booysen was the public prosecutor. They are charged in the case of the murder of Liyolo Wakweni (18). The two suspects, who are of legal age, are Gregan Stevans (18) and Lathita Buzani (18), have indicated that they will apply for legal aid from the Legal Aid Board.
There were a number of learners as well as teachers from the school at the court. Only these two appeared first, while the other suspects will appear in camera because they are minors.
The state prosecutor has indicated that she will oppose bail.
The case was postponed until 2 October for a formal bail application. It is unclear at this stage whether the other four minors have been released to the care of their parents/guardians. This is a developing story.
