2 August 2026: About six armed men broke the glass windows of Gabriël Jewellers in Fountains Mall this morning in Jeffreys Bay, Eastern Cape, around 10am, and made off with jewellery valued at thousands of Rands.
This is the second robbery in a week at the same premises. “The SAPS can confirm that they are currently, today, 2 August 2026, attending to a robbery crime scene at the same jewellery store where a business robbery was reported on 30 July 2026 in Jeffrey’s Bay,” SAPS Captain McCarthy said without naming the store.
Gabriël van Eeden, owner of Gabriël Jewellers, this morning confirmed the robbery and said the thieves managed to escape with stolen jewellery before the cops arrived. The SAPS are following up on leads, and there have been no arrests.
The SAPS also today gave a more detailed account of the jewellery robbery on 30 July at about 03.40 am: “Last week it is alleged that a private security guard was busy patrolling in the parking area of the shopping mall when a vehicle with five occupants approached him. One of the occupants got out of the vehicle and pointed a gun at the security guard. It is further alleged that four occupants got out of the vehicle and took the guard’s hand radio and cellphone.”
The SAPS further says the suspects then used the victim’s key to open the entry door of the Shopping mall leading into the shopping area. Crow-bars were used to remove two display windows. “High-end watches and some jewellery were taken before the five suspects fled the scene”.
The SAPS later announced the arrest of four suspects. The investigation is continuing.
