Edited by Kouga Chronicle, 14 April: The first snowfall of the year in the Western and Northern Cape is anticipated this weekend, 17-19 April, by Snow Report, while widespread rainfall in the interior, plus a thunderstorm warning for four provinces, is forecast for today and tomorrow, 14 April, and Wednesday, 15 April.
This is according to reports from the South African Weather Service (SAWS) and Snow Report.
Today it’s expected to be partly cloudy and cool to warm with isolated to widespread showers and thundershowers on Tuesday and tomorrow, Wednesday, fog patches can be expected in various regions of the country.
Tomorrow, it should be partly cloudy and cool to warm with isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers.
SAWS says scattered showers and thunder showers are likely to continue this week. A cut-off low (COL) in the interior of South Africa resulted in scattered to widespread showers and thundershowers over the central and eastern parts, and rainfall will persist throughout the week.
SAWS predicts it will be partly cloudy in the west or cloudy and cool to warm with isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers. These will be widespread over the central and eastern parts of the country, and SAWS warnings have been issued for severe thunderstorms from yesterday (Monday).
There is a high likelihood of minor impacts due to severe thunderstorms that are expected over the extreme southern part of Limpopo, Gauteng, and Mpumalanga Highveld on Monday and Tuesday. The weather conditions could cause localised damage to infrastructure, settlements (informal), property, vehicles, livelihood, and livestock.
“A low likelihood of significant impacts due to severe thunderstorms is expected over the escarpment areas of Mpumalanga. TAnd storms may result in flooding of susceptible low-lying areas (including bridges and roads) and damage to infrastructure and settlements,” SAWS warned.
The extended weather forecast for today (Tuesday) and tomorrow (Wednesday) shows partly cloudy and cool to warm with isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers.
A level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms with heavy downpours, lightning, hail, and damaging winds resulting in localised flooding and damage to settlements and infrastructure is expected over KwaZulu-Natal, the escarpment of Mpumalanga, the central and eastern parts of the Free State, as well as the extreme southern parts of the North West.
In the Northern Cape, it is expected to be cloudy at first with morning fog along the coast, otherwise partly cloudy with isolated showers and thundershowers in the central and eastern parts. It will be fine in the extreme west. The wind along the coast will be light to moderate south-westerly to westerly, becoming north-westerly in the afternoon.
In the Western Cape, there will be morning fog over the south-western parts, otherwise partly cloudy and cool to warm with a chance of rain over the south-western parts from late evening. The wind along the coast will be light to moderate westerly to north-westerly, but fresh south-westerly along the south coast.
The Western half of the Eastern Cape will have morning fog in places in the south, otherwise partly cloudy and warm, with isolated showers and thundershowers in the north in the evening. The wind along the coast will be light and variable, becoming moderate to fresh south-westerly by evening.
The Eastern half of the Eastern Cape may also experience morning fog in places, otherwise cloudy and cool to warm with showers and thundershowers over the northern and eastern parts. The wind along the coast will be light to moderate north-easterly, becoming north-westerly in the evening.
Xape Town is expected to have morning fog, otherwise partly cloudy with a chance of late evening rain. The wind will be light and variable in the morning, otherwise moderate north-westerly. Minimum/Maximum: 16/23°C.
Gqeberha will have light and variable wind, becoming moderate to fresh south-westerly by evening. Minimum/Maximum: 16/32°C.
East London will be cloudy, and the wind will be light to moderate north-easterly, becoming north-westerly in the evening. Minimum/Maximum: 17/29°C
