A rubber duck that washed ashore yesterday afternoon at Shark Point was set alight today at around noon.
Owing to the danger of flames spreading the local fire volunteers are trying to extinguish the flames before they can spread further.
It is thought the owners of the rubber duck may have set it alight. Investigations are continuing.
NSRI reports in its official press release received today by St Francis Chronicle that at 4 pm yesterday NSRI St Francis volunteer sea rescue duty crew were activated following reports of an 8.5 meter rubber-duck with engine failure washing towards shore at Shark Point, Cape St Francis.
” NSRI St Francis Bay volunteer sea rescue duty crew launched the sea rescue craft Spirit of St Francis II and dispatched its rescue vehicle and responded.
“On arrival on-scene the sea rescue crew found the rubber-duck washed onto rocks at Shark Point.
All people on board the rubber-duck were safely ashore and not injured.
“It is not clear how many people were on board when she washed ashore but a man claiming to be the skipper confirmed to NSRI that all crew were safely ashore and uninjured.
“NSRI attempted to assist to get the rubber-duck off the rocks but the attempts were unsuccessful and it has been left up to the owners to recover their boat when sea conditions are more favorable.
“The skipper and crew that were on the boat, believed to all be local men, respectfully declined to have their names or details released. “
