Yesterday, 30 July, a Jeffrey’s Bay gang leader who, according to the SAOs, led a terror campaign for some time, was finally kept off the streets after being sentence for life.
The infamous gang leader, Michael Smith, feared in Jeffreys Bay, was sentenced to life imprisonment on 29 July in the Humansdorp Magistrate’s Court. He received life imprisonment for crimes ranging from Murder, Attempted Murder, Possession of a firearm and ammunition, Malicious Damage to Property, and Assault.
He also received additional prison terms for murder, three counts of attempted murder, and multiple firearm-related offences.
According to the SAPS, he and his gang members carried out criminal acts, including widespread robberies and housebreaking. Community members were too terrified to report these crimes.
The SAPS investigating officer held a community awareness campaign to encourage people to speak out. A brave resident eventually broke the silence and reported a case of Assault with Intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH), enabling Jeffreys Bay Serious and Violent Crime Unit (SVCU) to gather crucial corroborating evidence, the SAPS said.
The SAPS related that Smith then fled JBay and went into hiding elsewhere. His hideout was found, Tactical Response Team (TRT) was activated, and Smith was arrested. The SAPS Jeffreys Bay Serious and Violent Crime Unit meticulously investigated the cases.
The SAPS also said that following several postponements during the bail application hearings, the state successfully opposed bail. Smith remained in custody throughout his trial until his conviction.
Commenting on this major local arrest, Sarah Baartman District Commissioner, Major General Thandiswa Kupiso, warned criminals: “This sentence sends an unequivocal message to criminal syndicates: your reign of terror will be dismantled, and you will face the full might of the law.
Kupiso highly commended the exceptional work of the Jeffreys Bay Serious and Violent Crime Unit detectives and the Tactical Response Team (TRT). “I want to salute the brave community members who found the courage to break their silence and partner with our Investigating Officer.
“This breakthrough proves that when the police and the community stand together, criminals have nowhere to hide.
“We will continue to protect our communities and reclaim our streets from gang violence.”
