Another car vaults off the Sand River Bridge

Another  car vaulted off the temporary Sand River Bridge about 4 pm today. The car was going in the direction of Humansdorp and went through a gap in the barriers to arrive on a ledge near the bottom of the Sand River.

The driver suffered from a head injury and was taken to hospital, traffic police at the scene related. There were no passengers and no eye witnesses at the scene when the police arrived.

It appeared the driver took the turn onto the bridge too widely and went through a gap in the barrier and the car flew through the air before dropping.

Despite a good tarred road surface, a speed sign of 60 kms before the corner onto the bridge from the St Francis Bay side and despite the barriers,  some cars are still careering off the bridge.  Some cars are also still coming to a rest on the river bed when travelling from the Humansdorp side.

The building of a new permanent and safer bridge is scheduled to start only in 2014.

  1. It’s nearly impossible to find knowledgeable people on this subject, however, you sound like you know what you’re talking about!

    Thanks
