The first J-Bay Xtreme Sports Challenge will take place from 5-10 July 2013 and will combine a range of sports activities, including surfing, skateboarding, open-water swimming, beach volleyball and mountainbiking.
The VW Rally will also be making its return to J-Bay on July 19 to add thrill to the programme.
The Challenge aims to attract families from across South Africa to particpate in the J-Bay challenge. The Jeffreys Bay sports communities and Kouga Municipality clubbed together to fill the gap left by the Billabong Pro.
Kouga Executive Mayor Booi Koerat has commended the local sports fraternity and municipal tourism team for putting together an exciting programme. “We were all disappointed to learn that the Billabong Pro would once again not be taking place this year.“One of our concerns was the tourism gap this would leave. We vowed to fill this gap to the best of our ability and thanks to our sports community Jeffreys Bay will still be the place to be this July,” he said.
The Mayor said there was a good chance that Supertubes would once again host an ASP World Championship Tour (WCT) event, of which the Billabong Pro was one, next year.
“The return of a WCT event will not, however, mean the end of the J-Bay Xtreme. It definitely has the potential to become the top annual sports festival in the country,” Koerat added.
The municipality is also using the Tourism Indaba 2013 at Durban as a platform to market the J-Bay Xtreme challenge to tourism roleplayers from across South Africa.
