Undefeated Woodridge U/14A Boys Hockey Team riding high

The Woodridge U14A boy’s hockey team has had an excellent start to their season, winning its first 6 games.

The team has scored 25 goals and has conceded only one so far. Some tough games lie ahead, but with a ‘come-from-behind’ win against York a few weeks ago, the team is confident it can meet challenges presented.   Luc Duval was selected to the EP A team while Ethan Haynes and Thomas Bailey made the B team. Jared Elsner has now also been included in the U14B EP team – called up this week from non-traveling reserve status.

Coach Jacques Botha comments: “In any season the measure of success should be the improvement of the players as individuals and a group, We have had some pleasing results but we continue to work towards developing our individual skills and understanding of the game.

“As an educator I view school sport as a means of nurturing a good character: respect for others, selflessness, accepting responsibility, hard work and fair play should underpin all we do.  This can be accomplished whether we win or lose a game”

Unfortunately the hockey team was not able to tour in the pre-season due to a number of players being out of the country.

Two of the boys hail from Kenya and one from Johannesburg.  The rest are from Port Elizabeth, Uitenhage,  Jeffrey’s Bay or St Francis.  Most of the team played in the Woodridge’s U16 Hockey Festival as part of an Invitation XI and they more than held their own against the older players.
