Today NSRI Pletternberg Bay volunteer duty crew assisted three people who were swept off the rocks at Robberg, while their Hermanus counterparts recovered a man’s body in the lagoon.
Plettenberg Bay rescue
Laurent Eray, NSRI Plettenberg Bay duty coxswain, said at 1 pm today , 21 April, NSRI Plettenberg Bay volunteer sea rescue duty crew were activated following reports of people swept off rocks by a wave at The Island, Robberg Nature Reserve.
The WC Government Health EMS were also activated and the NSRI Plettenberg Bay volunteer sea rescue duty crew launched its sea rescue craft Leonard Smith and responded. NSRI volunteers also hastened to the scene in their private vehicles.
“On arrival we found that off duty Mountain Rescue volunteer, James Stewart, who had been jogging in the vicinity at the time, had also stopped to assist. The three people, 2 females and 1 male, washed off the rocks by a wave, had managed to get back to shore without assistance. “
One of women, a 23 year-old student from Kwa-Zulu Natal, who is studying in Plettenberg Bay, had sustained serious lacerations, abrasions and bruising to her left ankle and to her right thigh .The other two were uninjured.
NSRI medics and Stewart treated her on-scene and she was secured onto a trauma board then loaded onto the rescue craft at the beach at Agter Straat. She and her two fellow hikers two fellow hikers were brought to the sea rescue base in Plettenberg Bay.
NSRI’s Dr Donald, WC Government Health EMS paramedics and MedLife private ambulance service paramedics continued with treatment and transported the patient to hospital by ambulance in a serious but stable condition. The doctors may have to operate.
Hermanus:
Deon Langenhoven, NSRI Hermanus deputy station commander, said at 3 pm today NSRI Hermanus volunteer sea rescue duty crew were activated following reports of a body found floating in the water at the Botrivier Lagoon, Fisherhaven.
The SAP responded and the NSRI volunteer duty crew towed the sea rescue craft, Le Jenmar II, which was then launched on-scene.
The body of an unidentified adult man was recovered from the sea and handed into the care of the police. The body was handed over to Forensic Pathology Services.
It is unknown at this stage how long the body was in the lagoon. Police opened an inquest docket .
