Rumours have been running wild in St Francis today with phones belonging to the Kouga municipality, to members of the disaster management team and those of St Francis Chronicle running off the hook with queries about the bridge closing at 12 pm today.
This follows fairly heavy rains throughout the night. But a member of the disaster management team has stressed that the bridge is not being closed at lunch time today.
This morning when St Francis Chronicle arrived at the bridge at 7.3o the bridge was holding well. The following photos show that despite the surface appearing a bit slippery, there are no potholes, no cracks and no danger of water flowing over the bridge from the St Francis Link’s side.
The water level is at least 3 metres below that of the road. The outflow pipes have water flowing strongly through them. Cars were traversing the bridge without difficulty.
A member of the local disaster management team, Keith Donaldson, said motorists and pedestrians are able to cross the bridge and need have no fear of it closing today. “If it does become necessary at a later stage to close the bridge people will be advised in good time.”
