Letter to The Editor, St Francis Chronicle:
Thank God our house was spared!
I would like to pay tribute to all the many that stood together and helped. What a spirit!
Thanks to Greg West for helping me and my son-in-law, Stephen Meyer. Here was Greg endangering himself in order to help – helping us to remove family photographs from the walls; helping to push jet skis into the canal in order to save them from the imminent fire while the flames were ski high round us with burning embers falling on our thatch roof house.Thank you Greg we appreciate your help. You were wonderful!
To Bob Meikle for encouraging us to move and get out of the danger zone. Bob, you worked like we were your very personal family. Thank you Bob. You are a fine example to many others. We appreciate you very much. Nothing is ever too much trouble for you. You are great Bob. Thank you again ! You are the sort of person I would go to war with! May God bless you and your family.
Then there was Martin Bester. Saw him on Tuesday morning late and he came to our house. He took glass that broke and by 4 pm was back with new glass. What excellent service! So polite and helpful. Thank you. You are an asset to St Francis.
I must mention Kerwin Allen who worked as hard as ever helping us all. You are a gem to the St Francis community. May God bless you and your family. Nothing is ever too much trouble for you. With your wife in hospital you still came and helped us at the house.
The St Francis Municipality should reward these fine people with special certificates for excellent community service – for putting themselves at risk in order to help others.

I couldn’t agree more. We had many people helping us when all we could do was watch the news as we live in Johannesburg. Our Neighbours the Black’s, father and son team, Kerwin, Brett and others ran into our burning house to save some of our belongings. Thank you so much for everything. We will be back for sure!!! 99 Canal Road
