Shootout today between JBay cops and alleged abalone poachers

Edited by Bev Mortimer: A high speed chase between police and alleged abalone  poachers in a Toyota Corolla this Sunday morning, 19 January, in Jeffreys Bay, ended up in a shoot-out between  occupants in another Toyota Corolla and the police.

At  about 1 am this am a SAPS K9 unit tried to stop the first  Toyota Corolla that was  believed to be involved in abalone poaching at the beach in Pellsrus.

Police sped after the vehicle but were interrupted by occupants in a second Toyota who shot at the police. The police retaliated and four occupants in the suspicious vehicle alighted and disappeared in between houses. The second vehicle fled the scene.  No person was injured during the incident,

Police said in the abandoned Toyota they found 119 abalone units valued at around R20K.  No person was arrested, but the investigation is continuing. An arrest is imminent.
