Rotary St Francis Bay has sent out an appeal for people to assist those families whose homes have been spoiled and some completely ruined through the sewerage spill in the Sea Vista area on Sunday morning.
At least six Sea Vista families had their homes inundated with the filthy mess and much of what they own was badly damaged or destroyed. “These people urgently need bedding, blankets and towels – anything dry and warm,” Rotary says in a press release. “We are also appealing for cash donations so that we can assist these families to replace their electrical appliances, bedding and cooking stoves.”
The sewerage spill occurred when the main sewerage pipe between St Francis Bay and the sewerage purification plant running through Sea Vista broke. Heavy rains dislodged a concrete air valve housing and raw sewerage spilled into the streets and homes of many residents living close to the spill. Aslso sewerage pipes near people’s homes broke causing more rivers of sewerage.
Kouga Municipality officials fixed the problem temporarily on Sunday and could only fix it permanently yesterday. The sewerage spill continued on Sunday night.
One of these unfortunate souls is Clifford Mgijima from Nomvula’s Knitters who did not sleep in 24 hours as he had to battle to protect his property from the deluge.
Donations of blankets and warm clothing etc can be left in at the Rotary ollection box at Superspar or with Frances Becker at Nomvula’s Knitters (off Tarragona Road, behind Honda Marine). Cash donations can be made to Rotary Club’s bank account: ABSA Account No 9095400303, reference: SFBFLOOD and your surname.
Rotary will ensure all donations go to families to provide them what they most need.
