A three-day Jeffrey’s Bay Surf Challenge is set for 28-30 April at The Point, Jeffrey’s Bay.
And a number of former World Tour professionals have confirmed their attendance.
The event is sponsored by BloodScan that has put up a total prize pool of R74 000 – with all finalists in all divisions receiving cash prizes. The first prize for the Open Division is R15 000.
The event will raise much-needed funds for the Supertubes Surfing Foundation. The Foundation has been preserving the waves and beaches of Jeffrey’s Bay since 1999. The Foundation is a joint venture between the local surf clubs and the surf industry in Jeffrey’s Bay.
Next month’s surfing event is an open event, incorporating 5 divisions: Open Men’s, U20 Boys, U20 Girls, U14 Boys and U14 Girls. The Open Division serves as the South African Surf Industry Cup with brand team riders accumulating points for their team while competing in the main event -all vying for the coveted Industry Cup.
Each Surf Industry team will have four members (three surfers and one person, who works for the relevant brand) – creating a fun element.
Teams confirmed are: Billabong, VonZipper, Zigzag Surfing Magazine, Rip Curl, Oakley, Quiksilver, Lizzard, Bomb Surf, RVCA, Nixon, Hurley and Firewire.
All have good surfers. There is bound to be some exciting surfing and good old rivalries to keep the action going.
SurfingSouth Africahas fielded an Eastern Cape Development Team while Oakley has a solid team that is a good contender for the cup: Greg Emslie, Davey Weare, Royden Bryson and Chappy Adshade.
These four have years of cut-throat World Tour competitive experience behind them. Oakley’s Greg Emslie says:”Point in Jeffrey’s Bay is a fun, rippable wave. I think the event will be a huge success and will bring the South African surfing community together.”
Historically, April is a good time for surf in the Eastern Cape, and hopes are high that there will be some good waves for the contest.
Event co-sponsors are Black Label, Sector9, Element and EP Skydivers. Red Bull will be supplying the energy for all contestants.
