Plett fisherman bitten by shark near JBay

Yesterday a Plettenberg Bay fisherman was bitten by a shark while trying to release it from his fishing line while fishing near Jeffreys Bay.

The NSRI release says NSRI Jeffreys Bay volunteer duty crew rushed to the scene after a request for urgent assistance from the 62 year-old victim. A friend had reported that a Ragged Tooth shark had bitten his friend at Papiesfontein, just North East of Jeffreys Bay when he tried to free it. The pair had been been shoreline angling, in preparation for an angling competition.

The NSRI Jeffreys Bay rescue vehicle, EC Government Health EMS, Gardmed ambulance services and Relay ambulance services were activated. On arrival on the scene the victim’s friend had already applied tourniquets to injuries, lacerations and puncture wounds to the man’s hand and to his calf.

The victim was transported to hospital by a Gardmed ambulance in a stable condition for on-going medical treatment. He is is expected to make a full recovery.

World renown surfer Mick Fanning was attacked by a in Jeffreys Bay in 2015, but fortunately escaped injury.
