Edited by Bev Mortimer – A driver found in possession of R80k worth of abalone was arrested during a high-speed chase when he lost control of his getaway vehicle following a burst tyre, and attempted to flee on Sunday this past weekend.

The Provincial SAPS report says on 11 November, at about 7 pm, the Gqeberha Flying Squad received info about a white Hyundai 110 illegally transporting abalone. While patrolling the area the vehicle was spotted and the driver, on noticing the police, sped off from the scene with flying squad in hot pursuit..
The driver allegedly drove recklessly and at the Harrower Road and Brock Road intersection, a tyre burst, and the driver lost control of the Hyundai. The driver then jumped out and attempted to flee but was arrested.
During a search of the vehicle, flying squad members confiscated two bags containing 516 units of abalone with an estimated value of R80 000. The SAPS also found that the Hyundai was reported stolen during September in the Mount Road policing precinct.
The suspect was detained on charges of attempted murder, reckless or negligent driving, possession of abalone, and possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle. The Provincial SAPS report adds that the incident was part of their clamping down on criminals involved in illegal abalone activities.
