A 26-foot commercial fishing boat, Penny Lover, with 6 crewmen on board was towed safely by NSRI Simonstown volunteers to Millers Point this morning, 13 January 2013.
According to Darren Zimmerman, NSRI Simonstown station commander, the NSRI were activated following reports of the boat having sustained gear box failure after striking a Sun Fish off-shore of Cape Point. The boat was headed for fishing grounds off Cape Point.
At 6.46 am NSRI Simonstown volunteer sea rescue duty crew were notified by the Transnet National Ports Authority following a request for assistance.
“Our NSRI Simonstown volunteer sea rescue duty crew launched our sea rescue craft Spirit Of Safmarine III and responded in calm sea conditions.
“On arrival on-scene we found the casualty boat adrift and all 6 crewmen, all from Klipheuwel, Western Cape, were uninjured.
A tow-line was rigged and the casualty boat was towed by the NSRI’s rescue vessel safely to Millers Point where it was recovered. No further assistance was required.
