NSRI PE save man from drowning

-Edited by Bev Mortimer –NSRI Gqeberha volunteer duty crew saved a 23 year-old man , who was apparently caught up in a rip current in the surf line, from drowning at Hobie Beach Pier.

It is believed he was caught up in a strong rip current that made it difficult for him to get to shore.

The NSRI duty crew were alerted to a drowning in progress and launched their rescue craft, 6 Alpha, while the NMB water rescue network was activated , NSRI rescue swimmers, EC Government Health EMS and the SA Police Services responded, and NMB water rescue network resources were mobilised.

On the beach members of the public directed the NSRI rescue craft to the local man in the breaking surf line. The NSRI rescue craft negotiated breaking waves to reach the man. He was rescued and placed on board the rescue craft and brought to the NSRI rescue station where he was assessed by paramedics.

He did not need any medical treatment at was taken to Hobie Beach to his vehicle.

We believe that while swim training he had been caught in strong rip currents that prevented him from getting back to shore.

Bystanders who assisted at Hobie Beach are commended for their efforts.
