NSRI embarks on long trip to rescue boat adrift at sea

The NSRI Richards Bay volunteer duty crew are en route to assist a 50-ton boat without power and adrift at sea 70 nautical miles  off-shore of Richards Bay and 20 nautical miles offshore of Sodwana.

Cornel du Toit, NSRI Richards Bay station commander, said at noon today, 22 April,  NSRI Richards Bay volunteer sea rescue duty crew were activated following a request for assistance from the 25 meter, private boat reporting to be  without power and adrift.

The three men on board ( last Port of call Pemba, Mocambique) are apparently sailing to Cape Town. In spite of their plight, the men report they are fine and in no imminent danger,

NSRI Richards Bay volunteer sea rescue duty crew launched our sea rescue craft Spirit of Richards Bay at 1 pm today with special preparations for a long range rescue operation (extra fuel, food and water). In a following wind the crew are expected to reach the casualty boat at approximately 8 pm tonight. 

The crew expect their return time with towing the casualty boat into an oncoming wind will be tomorrow morning.
