More than R6-million drugs seized in EC raids

In their steadfast fight against crime Eastern Cape SAPS have arrested 945 suspects for crimes ranging from murder to drunk driving and illicit drugs worth about R6 468 127.

This is according to a statement from the EC Provincial commissioner in South Africa, Lt Gen Nomthetheleli Mene , this evening, who said between 9-15 September an assortment of illicit drugs ranging from mandrax to Crystal Meth (aka Tik) were confiscated during various operations in the eight provincial districts.

Inclusive of 37 high density operations there were 70 322 actions executed with positive results. A total of 41 suspects were arrested for possession of unlicensed firearms and 41 firearms were seized, among the latter were seven rifles.

The statement said the following notable actions were executed :

• People searched – 23 060

• Vehicles searched – 6 866

• racking operations (conducted by tracking teams) – 146

• Vehicle checkpoints manned – 651

• Roadblocks manned – 36

• Liquor premises (licenced) visited for compliance – 1615

• Informal businesses (such as spaza shops) visited – 11 353

Notable arrests were:

• Contravention of the Firearms Control Act – 34

• Illegal possession of firearms – 41

• Drunk driving – 64

• Possession of illicit drugs –  174

• Assault GBH – 260

• Illegal dealing in liquor – 13

• Murder – 23

• Rape – 16

• Burglary – 39

Provincial Commissioner, Lt Gen Nomthetheleli Mene said, “We are very pleased with the excellent work that was displayed by both intelligence and operational members for the recovery of illegal firearms.  These operations are effective and we are seeing improvement in the hot-spot areas, especially in the problematic districts.”  Lt Gen Mene added.
