A solid pair of 74s saw Johannesburg golfer Marco Steyn taking a one-shot lead after two rounds of the Glacier by Sanlam Junior Series national final at the St Francis Links today, 26 September.
But with 40 knot winds predicted for the third and final round on Friday morning, the 15-year-old is expecting a tough time of it as he aims to claim victory, and with it a spot in the Orange Bowl Invitational in Miami.
“I’m not sure. We’ll see what the weather does tomorrow,” he said. “I’ve never played in winds as strong as they’re expecting so we’ll see what happens. I played well today, hitting the greens and fairways. I missed a few putts but I am happy overall.”
Meanwhile hot on his heels is Paul Boshoff who led the competition after a first round 70, but struggled a bit in the afternoon. Boshoff became the first player to birdie all four par 3s at the St Francis Links in his morning round.
“I must say, I hit four good shots on those holes so there were no long putts. They were all within 2m so that was pretty special,” he said of his achievement.
As for what lies ahead in Friday’s final round, Boshoff added: “When the conditions are tough, you just have to take it shot for shot. Don’t play against the guy who is playing against you because everyone is going to make high numbers and you just try and keep calm, see what happens and enjoy it.”
Theunis Bezuidenhout is joint second after carding 76 and 73 in the first two rounds. Pretoria’s Tristen Strydom has moved from joint 13th to fourth after a phenomenal second round 69 after carding 81 in the first round in the morning. Keegan de Lange, Jacques Smith and Clayton Mansfield all occupy the fifth spot on 152.
