Man dies when truck plunges into Durban harbour

container truck plunged into Durban  harbour today, 6 January 2013, and the local male driver  in his mid 20s died. 

The incident happened at the Port of Durban ‘B-Shed’ shortly before 2 pm today.

SAP divers recovered the driver’s body from under water.

NSRI Durban volunteer sea rescue duty crew were activated by the Transnet National Ports Authority following reports of  the the truck accident. Clifford Ireland, NSRI Durban station commander, said the man was confirmed dead by paramedics and his body was handed into the care of the Forensic Pathology Services.

NSRI Durban received the call about the accident at about  2 pm from Port control, Ireland said. “We diverted to assist and called the SAPS Search & Rescue to confirm they were responding. 

“Police are now in the process of recovering the truck and have opened an inquest docket which will also investigate the cause of the incident.”
