Letter to the Editor – ‘Our thoughts are with St Francis

To all in St Francis

Our thoughts are with you as you recover from the devastation of the fire which has caused so much destruction & no doubt heart ache, especially to those who lost their homes. Seeing the results of the fire firsthand has been so saddening.

As a family we enjoyed many years of wonderful weekends & holidays at St Francis, particularly during our time on the canals & have memories that have lasted a lifetime. For some this goes back to school days & staying in the bungalows behind what would become the hotel – a landmark & sign of progress in its own right.

For others it was toiling to build our first house; much of it done with one old mason & own hands.

For all of us, times spent on the beach, the river, boating, water-skiing, windsurfing, etc remind us of happy, carefree days. We trust that memories like these will sustain you as you re-build so that once again you can enjoy what is truly a unique & special place.

  1. The river was always such a special feature of St Francis Bay – the regatta’s at Christmas time and the New Year Race. No tar to complain about in those days, and the causeways on the road to Humansdorp flooding after heavy rain. Gathering at the tennis court to watch a movie…Cactus Flower, starring Goldie Hawn; and the visit from Eric & Susan Hiscock in Wanderer IV, stranded at the entrance to the ski run. He gave a talk & slideshow at the hotel then, the original one, with that wonderful conversation pit…..
