NSRI rescue volunteer duty crews together with SANPark rangers rescued a 55 year-old Italian lady tourist who was seriously injured after falling on the Tsitsikamma trail, and was airlifted to hospital
Lodewyk van Rensburg, NSRI Oyster Bay station commander, said last Friday, 21 June at 1 pm, NSRI Storms River and Oyster Bay duty crews, plus Relay ambulance service were activated following reports from Tsitsikamma rangers of an injured lady at the waterfall on the Storms River trail. EC Government Health EMS were alerted.
NSRI rescue teams and the rangers found the lady, who had had slipped and fallen, was in a serious condition. She was given ongoing medical treatment and her husband was brought to the car park where a helicopter landing zone was established.
EMS Metro Control dispatched the EMS/AMS Skymed rescue helicopter to the car park. A paramedic was hoisted down with additional medical equipment.
The lady was secured into a specialised scoop stretcher and accompanied by the paramedic, she was hoisted into the helicopter and airlifted to the landing zone. She was then transported to a hospital in Knysna by the Relay ambulance.
The lady patient recovered in hospital before being discharged.
NSRI commends the swift response and assistance of all services involved, including Good Samaritans who stayed with the patient until rescue resources arrived.
