A decomposing body of a man was hooked by a fisherman at False Bay this morning, 17 February 2012, while another body washed up in the surf onto Camps Bay beach , also this morning.
There have been no reports of any persons missing at either of those areas in the last couple of days. The SAP are investigating.
False Bay body:
Strandfontein NSRI volunteer sea rescue duty crew were activated following reports of a fisherman who had hooked a human body with his rod in the surf while fishing from the shore front, about 500 meters North of 9 Miles Beach on the False Bay Coast.
Mario Fredericks, NSRI Strandfontein station commander, said NSRI Strandfontein volunteer duty crew were activated following reports of fisherman’s find of a body on his hook. The volunteer rescuers and the SAP responded to the scene where the decomposed body of a man was found on the beach.
According to the fisherman he had hauled the body into shallow surf on his fishing line hook.
The body was handed into the care of the Forensic Pathology Services and police are investigating if the body is that of any missing persons over the past few months from drowning accidents or from other incidents.
Camps Bay:
Bruce Davidson, NSRI Bakoven station commander, said at 8.01 this morning Bakoven volunteer sea rescue duty crew were activated following eye-witness reports of a body spotted floating in the surf at Camps Bay Beach.
“On arrival on-scene the crew found members of the public, reported to be part of the Camps Bay Neighborhood Watch, had recovered the body of a man from the surf. NSRI medics immediately initiated Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) efforts.
“They were joined on-scene by Camps Bay Community Medics who continued with advanced life support CPR but despite all efforts to resuscitate the man he was declared dead on the scene by paramedics. The body was then handed into the care of the Forensic Pathology Services. ER24 ambulance services and the WC Government Health EMS also responded to the scene.
“The man, believed to be aged in his sixties or early seventies, has not been identified and Police have opened an inquest docket.
“The man was found wearing only a dark coloured striped (and checked) pair of swimming shorts. The Neighbourhood watch members scoured the beachfront looking for any clothing or identification to help the SAP to identify the man but nothing was found, No one has come forward to identify the man and there have been no reports of anyone missing or overdue related to this incident.
“It is believed that the incident may have happened recently, either this morning or during the night. But only an autopsy can determine the time of death.”
Note: The last person officially reported missing in the surf in the Western Cape was a 73 year-old man on holiday at Witsand – reported missing after his boat is believed to have capsized on 9 February 2013 in the evening.
