The Kouga Municipality announced today, 16 July, that alleged acts of fraud and corruption relating to the illegal sale of electricity led to the suspension of eight officials and two of them have since resigned.
An internal and external investigation is currently underway.
KM Mayor, Clr Hattingh Bornman, condemned the alleged acts and said maladministration or other dishonest activities will not be tolerated. “Irregular activities will be investigated and followed up by the application of all remedies available within the full extent of the law, as well as the application of appropriate prevention and detection controls. Suspects who are found guilty will be subjected to formal criminal charges,” he said.
The mayor urged residents to report any suspected maladministration to the office on the following number. 071 885 9888. Reports will remain anonymous and confidential.
Residents are urged to only purchase electricity from accredited vendors or municipal offices.
