EC MEC views damages to canal homes

 The East Cape MEC: Local Government, Mlibo Qoboshiyane, visited the area that was devastated by the fire today.

His office will be working with the municipality to do a needs analysis of those residents and home-owners who lost houses and homes in the fire, so that government’s disaster management units can identify ways to assist those affected.

 This was announced by Kouga Municipality this afternoon. The municipality says the cause of the fire is unknown.

“The forensic unit of the police has started their investigation but we have not received feedback from them as yet. A number of buildings were damaged: 75 houses, flats and garages. 1 business premises.

 “The number of families who lost the roof over their heads last night: 10. Several accommodation establishments have offered to put them up for free. However, som of the homeless have opted to stay with families and friends. Most of the houses were holiday homes and vacant.

 “No-one from the community was injured. Two firefighters were hurt – one broke his arm when he fell through a roof; the other hurt his hip. Both were released from hospital this morning.

 The municipality says unfortunately, no cost estimate of the overall damage is available at present. “Our Planning and Development department expect to have this ready by late tomorrow afternoon.”
