Donovan Coenraad from St Francis Bay is the overall winner of the 14th Calamari Classic at St Francis Bay Golf Club.

Coenraad with a handicap of 15 walked away with the coveted Calamari Classic trophy at the final prize-giving on Saturday night, plus a magnificent watch from Gabriel Jewellers Jeffreys Bay.

The overall ladies winner for the three days, 22-25 September, was Audrey Frankish from Cape Town with 97, who pipped local St Francis Bay resident Heather Rabie to the post by only 1 point. In third place was Debbie Hite, 93, followed by Linda van Niekerk, 93 and Michelle Niewoudt, 92.

The ‘Old Man’ trophy – presented annually to a player more than 50 years-old , who achieves the highest score over the three days of the Calamari Classic Golf – was presented to Petrus Senekal for his score of 109. His score was also 2nd highest overall so he was placed 2nd after Coenraad.

A record number of 256 players registered this year with players from all over South Africa and even abroad. Golfers, family and friends had three days of good golf, fun, food and entertainment.
The Club organising team took great steps and underwent months of fine planning to bring about this year’s Calamari Golf Classic once again. The main sponsors were Barloworld Equipment, South African Breweries and Henry Tayler and Ries. Without them this event would not have been possible.
At prize giving the organising committee under Captain Charlie Byl and Janine van der Merwe, the club staff, plus the green staff under Pikke Langenhoven, the greenkeeper and club superintendent, were praised for all their hard work and determination to get the course in top condition and everything at the Club organised before the event.
Chairman Rowan Nicholls said it had been feared one month ago that this local premier golfing event could be cancelled. “One month ago there was water all over the course following heavy rains and floods. We seriously did not think we would be able to hold the Calamari Classic. It was feared the course would not be dry and ready in time. But the green staff worked tremendously hard to get the course in its current top shape and keep on schedule. Everyone has been so impressed with the condition of the golf course and the great ambiance and organisation at the club that has been highly complimented.”

The Men’s winner for Day 3 yesterday was MJ de Bruyn with a score of 39, followed by Andre Venter, 39, Rowan Nicholls (last year’s overall winner of the Calamari Classic), 38, Linda van Niekerk, 38, and Petrus Senekal 38.

The winning team prizes on the final day went to Keith Condon, Len Terblanche Ken Wiggins and Rowan Nicholls with 111, followed into 2nd place by Janners Byles, MJ de Bruyn and Norman Pretorius with 107, and 3rd place by Alan Jeffrey, Andre Venter, Anton van der Merwe and SJ Bezuidenhout, and 4th place by Derek de Villiers, Audrey Frankish and Johan and Michelle Nieuwoudt .
A special prize of R4000 was up for grabs each day by the first player that hit a hole in one. Perhaps it was the fierce wind that blew for most of the three days and messed around with players’ drives, strides, putting and overall form, but there were no winners for this prize. So at final prize giving last night the R4000 was given back to the club by the sponsor Infinity.
Heather and Graham the catering staff who fed the big crowds over three days served great curries ( meat and vegetarian) and rice with many delicious sambals for the final night’s meal at the packed clubhouse. They were thanked for their great efforts.
After supper St Francis Bay’s popular resident DJ and muso, Johan Cronje, once again took the mike, plus his red guitar, and had party lovers boogie-ing the night away.
