The first day of of the Calamari Classic Golf tournament at St Francis Bay Golf Club yesterday started off in wet rainy weather with a fierce wind that howled and raged all day. Early golfers were welcomed onto the course with tots of Olde Brown Sherry to give them courage.
But as the morning wore on the bad weather deterred some players who gave their day’s game up and went home. There were also two teams (fourballs) who did not pitch.
Some players recounted at prize giving that they felt like they would be blown into the sea and it was so difficult if not impossible at times to find their balls as they went awol.
The overall winner of the first day was Anton Emslie with 38 points who pipped Clive Rabie to the post. Emslie received two Airlinks tickets to fly anywhere and Clive walked off proudly with a new golf bag.
The lovely prizes which included several fantastic Russell Hobbs appliances for the kitchen, was Barloworld.
Rabie achieved a score of 35. He was followed by Dassie Biggs in 3rd place with 35, Mervyn Brouard in 4th with 35, and Robbie Venske in 5th, also with 35.
Caroline Kettlewell on the organising committee and the club captain Ian Price conducted the prize giving and thanked the organising committee and the green keepers for their sterling efforts to make the 14 Calamari event a success again.
