NSRI St Francis Bay volunteer duty crew evacuated a critically ill patient suffering from seizures on a chokka fishing boat off Aasvogels, south of Oyster Bay today.
An NSRI paramedic initiated emergency medical treatment and the patient was transported to hospital by ambulance in a stable but serious condition.
Marc May, NSRI St Francis Bay station commander, said at 2.09 pm today (1 September 2011) the volunteer crew were activated following a request for urgent medical assistance from the fishing boat Vulgaris that reported a 23 year old local crewman suffering continuous seizures onboard.
“We launched our sea rescue craft Spirit of St Francis II accompanied by our NSRI paramedic and on arrival on-scene we found the patient to be in a critical condition. We activated Private Care ambulance services to respond to our sea rescue base to stand-by and our NSRI station doctor was placed on alert.”
Paramedic Robin Brown administered medical treatment, including resuscitation efforts (airway management). The critically ill patient was then loaded onto the sea rescue craft and brought to the sea rescue station where the NSRI station doctor continued treatment for seizures and for hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) .
“The patient is recovering in hospital and he is expected to make a full recovery,” May added.
