The contractor – appointed by the Department of Roads to rebuild the temporary bridge across the Sand River – is moving on site.
Work is expected to start tomorrow. Depending on the weather, the vehicle crossing should be completed by Friday at the latest.
The municipality has arranged with the Metro Ambulance Service for a chopper to be on standby for medical emergencies. Metro can be contacted on 042 291 0020. or phone the municipality’s emergency call centre on 042 291 0250.
At lunch time today construction vehicles carrying water pipes and other items arrived at the Sand River bridge.
Weather permitting, construction will start tomorrow according to Marius Keyser, senior road engineer, Department of Roads and (weather permitting again) could even be finished by tomorrow evening; if not by Thursday or Friday.

In related news, motorists have been asked to park their cars at least 200m from the bridge on either side to enable construction vehicles to get close to the bridge.
In the interim the bridge though broken was a hive of activity today as people walked to and fro across the precaious foot bridge with lots of deliveries. Cars were backed up for a couple of kms.
