Cocaine worth R80-m seized at Dbn airport

Edited by Bev Mortimer- Cocaine with a street value of R80-m , concealed in meat boxes from Brazil, was seized by the SAPS at King Shaka International Airport yesterday.

The SAPS says police officers attached to Durban Habour found the cocaine at a Dube Trade Port warehouse at the airport after tracking containers arriving into the country via the Durban Harbour from Brazil. From one container 228 blocks of cocaine was found concealed in meat boxes and disguised as such.

“This is the second drug bust in the last two days after R70-million worth of cocaine was seized from a container at the Durban Harbour. Police are investigating a case of trafficking of drugs. Investigations are underway to establish the final destination of these drugs.”

The SA Hawks, a special priority crime investigation unit of the SAPS, is investigating the incident. National Commissioner of the SAPS, General Fannie Masemola,s commended the team for the seizure of the cocaine, he said The SAPS continues to enhance cooperation with other law enforcement agencies across the world in a bid to clamp down on these illicit activities.

“The SAPS is hard at work in disrupting and dismantling trans-national, organised crime, which pose s a significant threat to communities we serve. We continue to intensify and strengthen the detection of drug trafficking and associated organised crime.”

He also said the SAPS is intensifying safer festive operations and there are more take-downs to come from the SAPS. They warned those involved in drug activities to surrender or they will be sniffed out, ” General Masemola said.
