A car plunged into the Kowie River at Port Alfred in the early hours of this morning.
Port Alfred NSRI crew members raced to to the river following reports of people trapped inside the car but were only able to find the driver.
“Our NSRI volunteer duty crew, Metro EMS, Fire and Rescue Services, Traffic Services, the SAP and a Police Dive Unit responded at 1.25 am,” says Keryn van der Walt, NSRI Port Alfred station commander.
“On arrival a search commenced along the river for persons suspected to be missing but the survivor, who raised the alarm, and who is believed to be the driver, was unclear as to whether there were other people inside the vehicle when it plunged into the river or not.
“He appears to have given police various accounts of what happened. A search has revealed no sign of any missing persons. The vehicle has been recovered and the SAP are investigating.”
