Edited by Bev Mortimer – Three former Kouga Municipality employees are in the Humansdorp magistrates court today , 27 March, on charges of fraud, corruption and contravention of the National Road Traffic Act 93 of 1996.
It is alleged the trio were issuing driving licences to motorists without conducting physical examinations (tests), as prescribed in the National Road Traffic Act 93 of 1996. The ex employees were arrested following a three-year investigation by the South African Police Service (SAPS) Anti-Corruption Unit.
The SAPS says the men, aged between 49-55, were also allegedly working for Kouga Municipality at Humansdorp Traffic Department as examiners.
Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Zithulele Dladla, said: “This arrest demonstrates the commitment of the South African Police Service (SAPS) to root out corruption, which is an occupational hazard in the public sector, and also endangers public safety.“
