Brave firemen fight big bush fire in fierce winds

A big bush fire started this afternoon round 2 pm  in the large highly vegetated  land opposite Balobi in Tarragona Road,  in the St Francis Bay suburb of Sea Vista in the Eastern Cape, South Africa.

DVG and local St Francis Bay and Kouga Fire Services arrived and were supported by large bowsers from the Links.  At the scene were fire trucks, at least four at one stage, plus private water tanks and the bowsers , plus many firemen were in the thick bush battling to extinguish fires for about two hours or more.

Sea Vista people helped firemen hold and untangle ropes and hold water pipes of that were being offloaded from bakkies with water tankers. Security force and traffic vehicles were in the vicinity  and the road was blocked off in the section from the Stop Street at St Francis Drive  to Meikles corner.

Owing to fierce winds it was no easy task. The local firemen were doing a tremendously good job with their hosepipes . Fires were dying out from fire hoses but in at least three spots at one stage, fierce winds fanned the smouldering bushes up again soon afterwards. By just before 5.30 pm it was reported the fire had been contained.

It is unknown how the fire started but some Sea Vista onlookers said they believed it could be campers in the bush or a dropped cigarette.
