NSRI Hermanus volunteer sea rescue duty crew evacuated a Polish ship captain 20 kms offshore of Hermanus on Monday this week.
The 59 year-old captain on the Liberian ship, Constel Papa, was suffering from abdominal swelling. The bulk container ship was en route to Brazil.
Gideon Loubser, NSRI Hermanus duty controller, said on 14 January at 8.06 pm duty crew and the NSRI helicopter Unit were placed on alert by the Transnet National Ports Authority following a request for assistance from the ship.
After a WC Government Health EMS duty doctor evaluated the medical condition of the patient by radio telephone, it was determined the captain should be casualty evacuated as soon as possible without delay to the nearest appropriate hospital. NSRI volunteer sea rescue duty launched their sea rescue craft South Star and responded.
“On arrival on-scene the patient was transferred onto our sea rescue craft and brought to shore where he has been transported to hospital by an EMS ambulance in a stable condition,” Loubser said.
