Beginners and recreational paddlers will have great fun in the ‘Tupperware Race” this long weekend.
Similar to the popular Old Year’s Eve ‘anything that floats’ race on 31 December each year, this 3 km mini race will follow roughly the same format. Entrants can use their imagintion and paddle anything that floats for which prizes are offered. They can create or decorate their own vessels be it kayaks, canoes, paddle skis, surf skis, surfboards, canoes, K1s, K2s, fishing skis, wind surfers or even bath tubs.
This fun event is part of the Pam Golding St Francis Bay Canal Winter Challenge on 6 August. Paddlers can choose to enter a 3 km, 13 km or 20 km race on the St Francis canals.
The entry fee is R40 that includes a cup of coffee and a sausage on a roll after the event. Registration starts at 9 am at The Cove in Shore Road . The event starts at 10 am. For more info tel: 083 284 0168. The event is organised by the new St Francis Bay Paddling Club.
Another local sporting highlight this weekend is the second annual Enid Pretorius Properties Trail Walk and Run on 9 August is along the perimeter of St Francis Bay and Cape St Francis.
Two distances can be done, the 26 km main event or only half the course – by stopping or starting at the Cape St Francis lighthouse, which is halfway. A prize will be awarded to the oldest and the youngest participant. The first three men and ladies home in the under 12, under 17 and open category will receive St Francis Sport medals.
Registration and number collections will be from 7 am at Enid Pretorius Properties offices in the Village Centre. The event starts at 8 am.
The route will take participants through St Francis Bay Golf Course and the St Francis Links towards The Dunes Private Nature Reserve. From there the road will lead to Mosterts Hoek and along The Wild Side and Cape St Francis lighthouse. The next stretch is along the beach towards Shark Point, then back to Port St Francis and the Two Harbours Walk, towards Granny’s Pool, then through the streets back to the Village Centre.
