Just after noon today NSRI St Francis Bay volunteer sea rescue duty crew were activated following a request for medical assistance from the chokka fishing boat, Lazarus, reporting a 50 year-old Port Elizabeth crewman on board suffering a suspected CVA (Cerebro Vascular Accident – a Stroke).
“They were deep sea off Jeffreys Bay at the time and began heading in the direction of St Francis Bay,” says Marc May, NSRI St Francis Bay station commander. “Our NSRI St Francis Bay volunteers were engaged at our annual fundraising golf day at the time and immediately dropped their clubs to respond to this emergency.
“Our NSRI volunteer sea rescue duty crew launched our sea rescue craft Spirit of St Francis II and mand a rendezvous with the fishing boat 14 nautical miles off-shore of Jeffreys Bay. Our NSRI medics stabilized the patient onboard their boat, treating the patient for what appears to be a CVA.
“The patient was then transferred across to our sea rescue craft and brought to our sea rescue base to a waiting ER24 ambulance and the patient has been transported to a local hospital in a stable condition by ambulance,” May says.
