More than 611 suspects and 229 convictions announced by Hawks

-Edited- General Godfrey Lebeya of the South African Hawks presented the first quarter of 2023/24 financial year report today, 4 September 2023.

These were successes achieved by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI),

DPCI members arrested 611+ suspects and 229 accused persons were convicted and sentenced for criminal offences, plus 16 of the latter convicts were sentenced for money laundering.

Most arrests were fraud related for 203 suspects, while money laundering amassed 48 suspects , plus 72 suspects were arrested for narcotics and endangered species. Also 288 suspects were arrested 17 types of national priority crimes.


The DPCI also seized various items, including precious metals, diamonds, endangered species, vehicles, cash, firearms, ammunition, counterfeit goods, explosives and electronic devices worth R6 112 768 985.

For crimes relating to the Covid-19 Relief Fund at the end of June 2023, 190 suspects appeared in courts and 64 accused persons were convicted 49 cases.

Thirty cases were highlighted by the courts, out of 840 successes. Of the 30 cases, 19 were for arrest while 11 are for convictions. These cases related to tax, fraud, embezzlement, misappropriation of funds, theft, corruption, and human trafficking for cheap labour and exploitation.
