Latest news on bigger, better St Francis Bay police station

The Department of Public Works has submitted a site development plan for the new St Francis Bay Police station and by all accounts plans for a bigger, better police station in the town are progressing well.

The police station will be built on the corner of St Francis Drive and Tarragona Avenue. The final building plans should be submitted by February 2012.

The municipality and Department have been finalising the Service Level Agreement (SLA) for the new police station. The SLA will ensure the municipality has the capacity to cater for service requirements of the development, including, water, sewerage, electricity, roads, storm water and refuse removal.

Kouga Executive Mayor Booi Koerat says the municipality had met with the Department  last week to ensure the project was progressing. “The aim is to complete pre-planning by end of February next year, so that construction can start in the 2012/13 financial year,” he says.

Koerat also spoke on the the ownership of the land where the police station is to be built. “The land was supposed to have been transferred to the St Francis Bay Transitional Local Council (TLC) when Santareme was developed, but the TLC did not do so. Consequently, the land is still registered in the name of the disbanded Santareme Homeowners’ Association and must now be transferred to Kouga so that it can then be transferred to the Department.”

According to the site development plan, the new police building will have a total floor area of 1 750m². This includes a service point (214 m²), office space (36 m²), crime investigation unit (82 m²), crime prevention unit (176 m²), cells (382 m²) and a wash bay.
