Hundreds of people, have gathered in Uitenhage in the Eastern Cape to celebrate Human Rights Day.
Today is the 30th anniversary of the Uitenhage Massacre on 21 March 1985. Today is als to the day to remind all South Africans of their human rights.
The evemt will be attended by delegates from civil society, religious leaders and government representatives. Minister of Justice and Correctional Services, Michael Masutha, will represent President Jacob Zuma and officiate at today’s commemoration. President Zuma and Minister of Arts and Culture, Nathi Mthethwa, will be at the funeral service of the late Minister of Public Service and Administration, Collins Chabane, who died in a car accident last Sunday in Limpopo.
The theme for today’s celebration in Utienhage is Celebrating the Freedom Charter, Enjoying Equal Human Rights for All.
The gathering is a follow up event to the summit that was held at the Walter Sisulu Memorial Square of Remembrance in Kliptown, Soweto, which also took place at the historic site of the Freedom Charter.
A National Social Cohesion Report Back Summit will take place in Port Elizabeth on 30 March as part of the celebrations. It will chart the way forward to speed up the nation building project.
