From wild game to the tame, from music bands, live entertainment, wine and food tastings, it will all be happening at the Kirkwood Wildlife Festival next weekend.
The EC Province’s biggest wild game auction takes place at this Wild Festival, plus one can take a walk on the wild side to visit spiders, snakes, owls and more. For those more into home loving pets there will be quality paws and claws of a domestic nature on show.
Then there will be white elephant stalls, gardening and agricultural alternatives, including worm farms, expos plus many activities for children.. Children above 4 years can have great fun under supervision at this Festival from July 1 to 3, while their paretns will be able to enjoy hours of shopping or enjoying the wide variety of activities, knowing their children are well occupied and safe.
“It is important for us that the whole family is able to enjoy the festival so that no-one is left at home,” says Jenni Honsbein, festival director. Kids can participate in bead workshops, biscuit decorating, colouring-in, train rides, jumping castles and games and watch Popsi and Hobi the clowns create balloon animals and magic shows – all for only R50 for two hours.
An extra R50 is charged for every 30 minutes after two hours and children under four years are to be supervised by parents. An evening child minding service is also available from 6 pm to 11 pm while parents enjoy the evening entertainment.
Pet-lovers visiting the festival will enjoy the Montego Boerboel Show at 11h00 on 2 July, a dog-jumping show at 09h00 on 2 July, and the Eastern Cape Cat Show Championships from 14h00-16h15 on 2 July and 09h00-11h00 on 3 July. The Absa Kirkwood Wildsfees has hosted the South African boerboel show for the last five years which has grown to be one of the biggest in the country with the most spectators by far.
“We hope this year to host the biggest Boerboel Show in the country and we are expecting over 100 dogs from all over to take part,” says Jakkie Erasmus, chairman of the Eastern Cape Boerboel Club. “This includes the new and rare black Boerboel specimens which have only been available to buy for the last 18 months.”
This year, a breeder will select offspring, of different ages, from his dog. These offspring will be judged, and the winners will be based on these results.
EPCC is one of the oldest cat clubs in South Africa and will be holding their 77th show at the Absa Kirkwood Wildsfees on July 2 (14h00 to 16h15) and July 3 (09h00-11h00) this year. The EPCC cats do very well at the South African Cat Council Cat of the Year awards. “Last year, one of the Ragdoll kittens took runner up Kitten of the Year and the father was placed in a top 10 position in the Adult Section,” says Rita Wiseman of EPCC. Some of the species cat lovers can expect to see at the Wildsfees include the hairless Sphynx, floppy Ragdolls, the biggest pedigreed cats Maine Coons, the pixie-looking Devon Rex, British Blue’s, Persians, Siamese and the dazzling Bengal cat with tiger-like markings. The event is privileged to have two experienced international judges from the US and Finland.
