A 35 year-old woman who went into labour on Robben Island at 3.04 am this morning, 24 July, was quickly evacuated from the island by NSRI duty crew.
The woman was transported by an NSRI rescue craft to the Port of Table Bay and then transferred by ambulance to hospital.
Pat van Eyssen, NSRI Table Bay station commander, said at 3.04 am this morning sea rescue duty crew were activated by the Transnet National Ports Authority following a request for medical assistance from staff on Robben Island reporting their colleague, a woman from Delft, Cape Town, to be in labour.
“Our NSRI Table Bay volunteer sea rescue duty crew launched our sea rescue craft Spirit Of Vodacom and responded accompanied by a WC Government Health EMS paramedic. On our arrival at Murrays Bay Harbour on Robben Island the patient was brought on board our sea rescue craft and made comfortable.
“She was brought to the Port of Table Bay where she was transferred into a WC Government Health EMS ambulance and was transported to the maternity ward at New Somerset Hospital.
“Our NSRI rescue crew and the EMS paramedics have wished her well with this which will be the birth of her fourth child.”
