US hiker rescued by NSRI Plett after a fall – photos

NSRI Plettenberg Bay volunteer duty crew rescued a 20 year-old hiker who fractured her ankle on the weekend when she jumped onto a beach while hiking at Robberg Island.

Neda Chavoshi, 29m from California in the US, who is a student the University of Cape Town, inadvertently landed on rocks concealed by foam on the beach. 

The NSRI volunteers had to hike with the student strapped to a stretcher for 1.5 hours back to the car park and rescue vehicle. They had to carry her in shifts.

Deon Truter, NSRI Plettenberg Bay station commander, said NSRI Plettenberg Bay duty crew were  alreted  at 6.50 pm on Sunday evening, 9 June that a hiker had been injured at Robberg Island, Robberg Nature Reserve. The NSRI crew members responded by road as sea conditions were extremely rough and Robberg Island could not be approached from the sea side.

On arrival on-scene our NSRI rescuers hiked to the location of the patient where they found Neda suffering a suspected fractured right ankle sustained after she jumped and fell when landing on concealed rocks on the beach.

“The patient was reassured and the ankle splinted and she was secured to a trauma board and we hiked her to our sea rescue vehicle and transported her to the Medi-Clinic in Plettenberg Bay where our NSRI doctor, Dr John Donald, treated her further before she was carried to the car park. “The patient remained in good spirits throughout the incident.

“X-Rays confirmed a fracture and the ankle has been set and placed in a cast. The student is due to return home to California in a week’s time.”
