Frenchman escapes rip currents

A 52 year-old Frenchman, Sivihan Carim, on holiday in South Africa was lucky to reach shore after being swept out to sea by rip-currents while swimming with a friend at Flat Rock in the Wilderness.

Paramedics on the beach evaluated him and found he was suffering from near drowning symptoms. The Frenchman declined to be transported to hospital.

NSRI Wilderness say they were activated today, 12 March, following a drowning in progress  at 12.52 pm, 3 kilometers East of the NSRI Wilderness rescue base.

Sea rescue duty crew launched the  sea rescue craft Serendipity and the Discovery rescue runner and the SAP, the SA National Parks rangers and the ER24 ambulance services responded. But the man had reached shore with on his own without any assistance.

The casualty and his friend were advised to look out for secondary drowning symptoms and they were briefed on who to call and what to do if secondary drowning occurred. Paramedics are confident the Frenchman is in no danger.
